In October 2008, astronomers spotted a small asteroid — 2008 TC3 — and tracked it all the way down: the first time in history that humanity predicted an asteroid strike before it happened. It blazed in over Sudan's Nubian Desert and scattered. Scientists later gathered hundreds of its meteorite fragments from the sand and named them Almahata Sitta — "Station Six."في أكتوبر ٢٠٠٨ رصد الفلكيون كويكبًا صغيرًا — 2008 TC3 — وتتبّعوه حتى لحظة سقوطه: أوّل مرّة في التاريخ يتنبّأ فيها الإنسان بارتطام كويكبٍ قبل وقوعه. اشتعل فوق صحراء النوبة السودانية وتناثر، فجمع العلماء مئات شظاياه النيزكية من الرمال وأسموها «المحطة ستة».


Off Sudan's coast lie some of the most pristine coral reefs on Earth — Sanganeb and Sha'ab Rumi — alive with sharks, manta rays and turtles. In 1963 the legendary Jacques Cousteau built "Conshelf II", a real underwater village where divers lived for weeks on the reef.
