A Nation of Scholarsأمّةُ العلماء
Sudan has always treasured learning. Its old universities and medical schools in Khartoum were once among the most respected in Africa and the Arab world, and to this day Sudanese doctors, engineers and teachers serve with distinction from the Gulf to Britain. Pride of the Nationفخرُ الوطن
Al-Tayeb Salih
Hailed as the "genius of the Arabic novel," al-Tayeb Salih gave the world Season of Migration to the North — ranked by Arab critics among the finest Arabic novels ever written. His tales of village life on the Nile carried Sudan onto the world's bookshelves.لُقِّب بـ«عبقري الرواية العربية»، وأهدى العالمَ روايةَ «موسم الهجرة إلى الشمال» — التي عدّها النقّادُ العربُ من أعظم ما كُتب بالعربية. حملت حكاياتُه عن حياة القرية على النيل اسمَ السودان إلى رفوف العالم.
Ibrahim El-Salahi
A founder of African and Arab modern art, Ibrahim El-Salahi wove Arabic calligraphy and Islamic and African forms into a language all his own. In 2013, London's Tate Modern gave him the first full retrospective it had ever devoted to an African artist.أحدُ مؤسّسي الفنّ الحديث العربيّ والإفريقي، نسج إبراهيم الصلحي الخطَّ العربيَّ والأشكالَ الإسلامية والإفريقية في لغةٍ خاصّةٍ به. وفي 2013 أقام له «تيت مودرن» في لندن أوّلَ معرضٍ استعاديٍّ شاملٍ يخصّصه لفنّانٍ إفريقيٍّ على الإطلاق.
Mo Ibrahim
Engineer and entrepreneur Mo Ibrahim built one of Africa's first great mobile networks, connecting a whole continent. He then gave much of his fortune to a foundation that champions good governance and rewards Africa's most honest leaders.بنى المهندسُ ورجلُ الأعمال محمد إبراهيم واحدةً من أوائل شبكات الهاتف المحمول الكبرى في إفريقيا، فوصل قارّةً بعضَها ببعض. ثمّ وهب جانبًا كبيرًا من ثروته لمؤسّسةٍ تناصر الحُكم الرشيد وتكافئ أنزهَ قادة إفريقيا.
Leila Aboulela
Writing in English from Khartoum to Aberdeen, Leila Aboulela won the very first Caine Prize for African Writing. Her tender novels of faith, migration and Muslim women have been translated into many languages and loved around the world.تكتب بالإنجليزية من الخرطوم إلى أبردين، وقد فازت ليلى أبو العلا بأوّل جائزة كين للأدب الإفريقي على الإطلاق. وتُرجمت رواياتُها الحانية عن الإيمان والهجرة والمرأة المسلمة إلى لغاتٍ كثيرة وأحبّها القرّاء حول العالم.
African Champions, 1970
Sudan was one of the founders of African football itself — the continent's federation was born in Khartoum in 1957. And in 1970, before their own roaring crowds, the Sudanese national team lifted the Africa Cup of Nations as champions of the continent.كان السودان أحدَ مؤسّسي كرة القدم الإفريقية ذاتها — فقد وُلِد اتحادُ القارّة في الخرطوم عام 1957. وفي عام 1970، أمام جماهيره الهادرة، رفع المنتخبُ السوداني كأسَ الأمم الإفريقية بطلًا للقارّة.
Healers of the World
Sudan has long been famed for its doctors. Trained in respected, time-honoured schools of medicine, Sudanese physicians and surgeons serve in hospitals across the Gulf, Britain and the world — quietly carrying their country's name wherever they heal.طالما اشتهر السودان بأطبّائه. تخرّجوا في مدارسَ عريقةٍ محترمةٍ للطبّ، فيخدم الأطبّاءُ والجرّاحون السودانيون في مستشفياتِ الخليج وبريطانيا والعالم — يحملون اسمَ بلادهم في صمتٍ حيثما داووا.
Pride War Cannot Eraseفخرٌ لا تمحوه الحرب
Even now, in the hardest of times, Sudanese excellence shines on — students topping their classes abroad, artists and writers winning the world's acclaim, athletes carrying the flag with pride. Hardship has taken much from this nation, but it has never been able to take its talent, its dignity or its will to rise again.حتى الآن، في أصعب الأوقات، يظلّ التميّزُ السوداني ساطعًا — طلابٌ يتصدّرون صفوفهم في الغربة، وفنّانون وكُتّابٌ ينالون إشادةَ العالم، ورياضيّون يحملون العلمَ بفخر. أخذت الشدّةُ من هذه الأمّة كثيرًا، لكنّها لم تقدر قطّ أن تأخذ موهبتَها ولا كرامتَها ولا إرادتَها في النهوض من جديد.
