Sudan's capital is really three cities in one, gathered around the point where the Blue and White Niles meet — al-Mogran. Khartoum holds the government and the gardens; Omdurman, across the river, keeps the soul, the souq and the song; and Khartoum North hums with industry. الخرطومWhere the two Niles embrace stands Khartoum, the nation's capital — a city of riverside avenues, palm-lined corniches and golden sunsets over the water. From here the country is governed, and here its heart beats fastest.حيث يعانق النيلان بعضهما تقوم الخرطوم، عاصمةُ البلاد — مدينةُ الشوارع النهرية وكورنيشات النخيل وغروبٍ ذهبيٍّ على الماء. من هنا تُدار البلاد، وهنا ينبض قلبُها أسرعَ ما يكون.
Omdurmanأم درمان
أم درمانAcross the river lies Omdurman, the largest city and the very soul of Sudan — home of the great souq, the famous wrestling arenas and the Friday dhikr of the dervishes. Kassalaكسلا
كسلاBeneath the smooth granite domes of the Taka Mountains lies Kassala, famed for its fruit gardens, its lively markets and the white shrine of the Khatmiyya. Many call it the most beautiful town in all of Sudan.تحت قِباب التاكا الجرانيتية الملساء تربض كسلا، الشهيرةُ ببساتين فاكهتها وأسواقها النابضة وقُبّة الختمية البيضاء. ويسمّيها كثيرون أجملَ مدن السودان قاطبةً.
Suakinسواكن
سواكنBuilt entirely of coral stone, the ancient island-port of Suakin was for centuries the gateway of pilgrims sailing to Mecca. Its weathered ruins still rise from the sea like a memory carved in white.مبنيّةٌ بالكامل من حجر المرجان، كانت جزيرةُ سواكن المينائيةُ القديمة لقرونٍ بوّابةَ الحجّاج المبحرين إلى مكّة. وما تزال أطلالُها العتيقة تنهض من البحر كذكرى منحوتةٍ بالأبيض.
Karima & the Northكريمة والشمال
كريمة والشمالIn the far north, the town of Karima sleeps beneath the sacred mountain of Jebel Barkal, ringed by royal pyramids and Nubian villages painted in bright colours. Here the Nile and the deep past are never far apart.في أقصى الشمال، تغفو مدينة كريمة تحت جبل البركل المقدّس، تحوطها الأهراماتُ الملكية والقرى النوبيةُ المطليّةُ بالألوان الزاهية. هنا لا يبتعد النيلُ والماضي السحيقُ أحدُهما عن الآخر.
From Reef to Pyramidمن الشُّعب إلى الهرم
Beyond the cities, Sudan is a traveller's dream waiting to be discovered. Dive the untouched coral of Sanganeb; walk the royal pyramids of Meroë at dawn; climb the sacred slopes of Jebel Barkal; track wildlife in the wild green of Dinder; and rest in painted Nubian villages along the river. Few places on Earth offer so much, seen by so few.وراء المدن، السودان حلمُ رحّالةٍ ينتظر أن يُكتشَف. غُص في مرجان سنجنيب البِكر؛ وامشِ بين أهرامات مروي الملكية عند الفجر؛ واصعد سفوحَ جبل البركل المقدّسة؛ وتتبّع الحياةَ البريّة في خُضرة الدِّندر؛ واسترح في القرى النوبية المُلوَّنة على ضفاف النهر. قليلةٌ بقاعُ الأرض التي تمنح هذا الكمّ، ويراها هذا العددُ القليل.
