Sharper and steeper than those of Giza, the pyramids of Meroë number over two hundred — the densest field of pyramids on Earth. Beneath them sleep the rulers of a civilization that traded gold, iron and ivory across the ancient world, from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. أحدّ وأكثر انحدارًا من أهرامات الجيزة، تتجاوز أهرامات مروي المئتين — أكثف حقل أهرامات على وجه الأرض. تحتها يرقد حكّام حضارةٍ تاجرت بالذهب والحديد والعاج عبر العالم القديم، من المتوسط إلى البحر الأحمر.
The Kandakes — queen mothers of Kush — led armies and built temples. One of them, Amanirenas, fought Rome to a standstill and won terms even an emperor had to honour. Their legacy remains a symbol of dignity and strength across Sudan today. الكنداكات — ملكات كوش — قُدنَ الجيوش وشيّدنَ المعابد. واحدةٌ منهنّ، أماني ريناس، صمدت في وجه روما وانتزعت شروطًا اضطُرّ إمبراطورٌ لاحترامها. إرثهنّ رمزٌ للكرامة والقوة في السودان إلى اليوم.
Kush worshipped the great god Amun at Jebel Barkal — a holy mountain crowned by a pinnacle the ancients believed was shaped by the gods — and the lion-headed warrior god Apademak, found nowhere else on Earth. Their temples still stand against the desert sky. عبدت كوش الإله العظيم آمون عند جبل البركل — جبلٌ مقدّس تُكلّله قمةٌ آمن القدماء أن الآلهة نحتتها — والإله المحارب أبادماك برأس الأسد، الذي لا يوجد في غير هذه الأرض. وما زالت معابدهم شامخة في وجه سماء الصحراء.
