Sudan carries the largest livestock wealth in the entire Arab world, and one of the largest in Africa — well over a hundred million animals spread across its savannahs, deserts and river plains. For millions of Sudanese these herds are not just an economy; they are a way of life, a savings account on the hoof, and a source of deep pride. Each year Sudan ships millions of live animals abroad — sheep above all to Saudi Arabia, where it supplies more than a quarter of the kingdom's imports, and camels by the thousand to Egypt. Live-animal exports earn the country over seven hundred million dollars a year, making this the fastest-growing non-oil export Sudan has. When the world needs meat for Ramadan and the Hajj, much of it begins on Sudanese pasture.في كلّ عامٍ يُصدّر السودان ملايين الرؤوس الحيّة إلى الخارج — الضأنَ قبل كلّ شيءٍ إلى السعودية، حيث يوفّر أكثر من رُبع وارداتها، والإبلَ بالآلاف إلى مصر. وتدرّ صادراتُ الحيوان الحيّ أكثر من سبعمئة مليون دولارٍ سنويًّا، فتكون أسرعَ الصادرات غير النفطية نموًّا في السودان. وحين يحتاج العالم اللحمَ لرمضان والحجّ، يبدأ كثيرٌ منه على مراعي السودان.

For all its scale, this wealth runs far below its potential. With modern abattoirs, cold chains, veterinary care and processing — turning live animals into packaged meat, leather and dairy, and the catch into canned and frozen fish — Sudan could multiply its earnings many times over and help feed the whole Arab world.
